Get ready for the taxman!
Even though income tax time only comes around once a year, there are things you can do now to help prepare for filing:
  • Know your tax bracket and your tax rate to help determine if there are ways to reduce your tax bill. Use our 1040 Tax Estimator Calculator to help estimate your tax bill.

  • Decide if you want to take the standard deduction or itemize your deductions.
    • If you plan to itemize, begin gathering receipts for deductible items, like out-of-pocket medical expenses, childcare costs, interest on mortgages, and charitable contributions.

    • Make charitable donations before the end of the year and get receipts. Remember, fair market value (FMV) should be used to determine your deduction. FMV is the price a typical buyer would pay for your used clothing or other items, based on age, condition, style, and use. If you plan to donate high value items, including paintings, antiques, other objects of art, jewelry, or gems, ask the IRS about appraisals and documentation required for these items.

  • Visit the Internal Revenue website, www.IRS.gov This is a third party link. Please see disclosure below., for the latest information on federal income tax. You can download and print forms and publications, including "Pub 17," a comprehensive guide to help you get ready for the tax season.

  • Visit your state department of revenue website for information on your state income tax. The Colorado State Department website can be found here This is a third party link. Please see disclosure below..
